 ABOLITION OF TITLES(ARTICLE 18)



These titles are hereditary because these titles are inequalities in society. So in article 18 Hereditary titles of nobility were banned. citizens cannot accept titles from foreign state.state can not confer any title on anybody. Office of profit understate cannot accept presents ,emolument( salary) or office(position)from foreign state but it possible if they get consent from president.

office of profit has defined in supreme court interpretation that is An office of profit under state means a position in state/central or local government which brings financial gains (i.e. salary or perks). 

Exceptions in article 18

In military or academic distinction like major , colonel, doctor, engineer etc is allowed.

In national awards like bharat ratna , padma wards 

In 1996 ,balajiraghavan vs union of india the supreme court givesjudgement  article 18 banned the hereditary noble titles but national award is give based on merit and so the national award is constituional valid.but it should not be used as suffixes or prefixes tot the name of awardees.

article 18 is directory article it gives only direction not do like that in society because there is no penality for inringement of article 18.
